”If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow”

Innovation in education takes time, and there are a lot of new techniques and digital tools that we as teachers should know something about and preferably put into use. We cannot teach in the same way we were taught, because  today’s children were simply born in a different time – as illustrated by the headline quote by John Dewey (picture). So let’s take a trip down memory lane and how far we have come in using technology and digital tools to create successful learners.

The infographic below, created by WebWiseTutors, presents a brilliant overview of the technological and innovative development in education. It starts with an overview of the technology throughout the ages, beginning with the horn-book in 1650, and ending in 2012 with the tablet.

Secondly, it presents the top current trends in teaching, such as flipped classroom, online tutoring and game based learning.

Finally, the infographic presents tips on how to become an innovator your self. We can all be innovators in our own individual ways by for instance embracing chances, experimenting and never stop learning.

“Technology can become the ‘wings’ that will help the educational world to fly further and faster than ever before – if we allow it” – Jenny Arledge

  1. Reblogged this on mariannelv and commented:
I just had to borrow this from Lena’s blog. The technological development is fantastic. Take a chance, experience and learn!

  2. Exciting post Lena! The graphics make the topic come alive. Are there any of these methods that you will be using in your teaching career?

    • Thanks! 😀 I am thinking of trying out flipped classroom, since I have recently been taught how to record my voice on ITL and how to use a screen-shoot tool to make a video by combining a PP and my voice for instance. I have also tried out game-based learning with my special needs class with positive feedback and results. In addition, I wish to be an Innovator by trying to embrace change, experimenting and never stop learning 🙂
